Highway 1

Highway 1 is a film about finding magic in a world that seems void of anything wonderful. A disillusioned man walks through the city, unsettled by the sound and sadness of his urban surroundings. Desperate for a moments escape, he drives to the sea. While peacefully walking the shoreline, he experiences something he never thought possible.

The main idea for this story has been in my head for years, influenced by my life experiences and my love for the sea. Since I was a young girl, my favorite painting has been A Mermaid by John William Waterhouse. I wanted to bring that subject to life, and this film gave me the opportunity to create that character. The overall mood of the film was really inspired by a news story I read in 2016. A crowd at a beach in Argentina pulled an endangered baby dolphin from the water. The crowd passed the dolphin around, taking selfies with it. Sadly, the baby dolphin died. The story made me think about living in a world where some people would treat such a magnificent creature with such disrespect for the sake of a social media post. Highway 1 shows the world as I would like to see it – a world where magic is real and appears when we need it most.

The film stars Victor Ross II and Maurisha Nicole. It was completed in 2019 and is being submitted to film festivals around the world. Follow the blog to learn more about Highway 1′s wayward journey and to receive updates on festival submissions.
